New Features Coming to Trail Ready
We’re excited to share what’s coming next for Trail Ready as we continue building the most comprehensive Appalachian Trail resource for hikers at every level. Whether you’re planning your first weekend section or gearing up for a thru-hike, we’re adding new tools and content to help you succeed on the trail.
Interactive Trail Map Launch
One of our most requested features is finally here. We’re launching an interactive trail map that lets you explore the entire Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine. Click on any section to see detailed information about elevation profiles, shelter locations, water sources, and nearby resupply towns.
The map will include user-submitted trail condition updates, so you can see real-time reports from hikers currently on the ground. Planning to hike a specific section next month? Check the map to see what recent hikers are saying about trail conditions, weather challenges, and any closures or reroutes you should know about.
We’re also adding a route planning feature that lets you build custom itineraries based on your hiking pace and preferences. Input your average daily mileage, and the tool will suggest logical stopping points and resupply strategies for your trip.
Expanded Gear Reviews
Our Gear & Equipment category is getting a major upgrade. We’re adding detailed, hands-on reviews of popular AT gear including boots, trail runners, backpacks, tents, sleeping bags, and rain gear. Each review will include real feedback from thru-hikers who’ve tested the gear over hundreds of miles.
Beyond individual product reviews, we’re creating comparison guides that pit similar products against each other. Trying to decide between three different lightweight tents? We’ll break down the pros, cons, and best use cases for each so you can make an informed decision.
We’re also launching a gear swap section where hikers can buy, sell, or trade used equipment. This community marketplace will help you find quality gear at lower prices and connect with other hikers in your area.
Community Forums Beta
The Trail Ready community forums are launching in beta next month. This will be your space to ask questions, share experiences, and connect with fellow hikers. We’re organizing forums by topic including trail planning, gear discussions, section-specific questions, and general AT chat.
The forums will also host our Trail Tales Tuesday discussions, where you can comment on featured hiker stories and share your own experiences in the community. We’re looking for moderators who are passionate about the AT and want to help build a welcoming, supportive community space.
Weekly Video Content
Starting in March, we’re adding video content to complement our written guides. Expect gear demos, trail tips, preparation tutorials, and interviews with experienced thru-hikers who’ve completed the trail multiple times.
Our first video series will focus on essential skills for new backpackers including how to properly fit a backpack, set up different tent styles, use a water filter, and plan your first overnight trip. We’re keeping videos short and practical so you can quickly learn what you need without wading through unnecessary content.
Launch Timeline
March: Interactive map & forums
April: Gear reviews & downloads
May: Enhanced sections guide & marketplace
